Descendants of Benjamin Sellers

Some Preliminary Notes and Caveats:

(1)  Information about generations 1 through 2, below, came entirely from one source, Ana Montero-Smith, and I have no idea where she got that information or how reliable it is.  It's not that I have anything against that particular information, it's just that I know how hard it is to get a grasp on generations that far back in time from records and it's generally too far back for much in the way of oral history... and I know absolutely nothing about it's ultimate sources.

(2)  Generation 3 below is a composite of information from
Ana Montero-Smith and various bits and pieces of information I've picked up here and there over the past 10 years or so.  I'm particularly dubious of the Alexander Peacock, Sr./Elizabeth Sellers information, but all of it is largely conjectural.  I include it not as fact but as hypothetical and in serious need of further research to confirm or demolish.

(3)  My main focus initially was to attempt to put together my own direct line which I early on learned to have been through William Sellers to Jacob Benjamin Sellers.  I was able to gather a lot of oral history on the line, starting with information my father gave me about his grandfather Richard M. Sellars when I was a child and working from there to the Veal descendants who first told me about William and Jacob Benjamin.  But this oral information came with almost no context in geographical location, and what little there was, was almost misleading.  Eventually, I found out why.  In a nutshell, Jacob Benjamin Sellers never stayed in any one place very long; apparently never owned any land; he and his wife Georgia Ann Joiner died in 1862 when most of his children were minors and they were scattered; his only mature child, George W. Sellars, died in a Confederate military hospital in1863; and my great grandfather Richard M. Sellars became a disability discharged Confederate soldier at age 14, never did learn to read or write, and for many years had no idea of where his brothers and sisters had gone to.

(4)  What has allowed me to put together a not necessarily perfect but much more complete picture of William Sellers family than anyone else so far, is that I found an original affidavit in George W. Sellars' Compiled Confederate Service Record in which Susan Sellers, apparently Susan West Sellers who was a daughter of William West and was also wife of Elijah Sellers, sought payment to her of George W. Sellers' Confederate back pay.  This document is extraordinarily darkened by time and all but completely illegible, but I was able to glean just enough from it to understand that Elijah was Jacob Benjamin's brother.  What had baffled me for a long time was that I knew that William Sellers was from North Carolina, but I did not know that he and several of his children had settled in Thomas County, Georgia, at a very early date.  My great grandfather Richard M. Sellars lived in Thomas County most of his adult life, and told his children that they were not related to any of the other Sellers who lived in the area.  I suspect that he might have known better, but maybe not.  After all, he lost his parents when he was a teenager and also lost contact with all of his closest family at that point.  Both Richard M. Sellars and my grandfather Charley Henry White were orphans, and there seems with both of them to have been a psychology at work that since they didn't get any help as children from their extended families... more or less "To hell with 'em.  We're not related."  In researching both of them I was initially up against a substantial barrier in the oral history because of this.  Richard M. Sellars' children took this to such a point that though they knew that their father was illiterate, they deliberately spelled their last name with an "a" instead of an "e", and used that the buttress their father's assertion that the other Sellers in the area were not related.  However, as best I can tell, all or nearly all of them were.  For a long, long time, in spite of having somewhat overcome the barrier of oral history in understanding this, I still didn't understand that the William Sellers who settled in Thomas County was my great grandfather's grandfather.  But after piecing together Jacob Benjamin Seller's siblings, that too finally became obvious.

(5)  My best information as shown below is on the descendants of Jacob Benjamin Sellers, the information on his siblings having been taken almost entirely from information posed on the web by their descendants buttressed in some cases by census, marriage and other records; but even in Jacob Benjamin Sellers' line, some things are not entirely clear.  I'm not certain who George W. Sellars' mother was, and I'm not certain who Alford Sellars' parents were.  Alford himself was a key person in my father's oral history who as a travelling stove repairman eventually reunited my great grandfather with at least the families of  his sisters who married into the Veal family, and Alford was also apparently raised in the extended Veal family.  I think it most likely that he was the last child of Jacob Benjamin Sellers and Georgia Ann Joiner, but it's also possible, perhaps, that he was a son of George W. Sellars.  In either case, it seems likely that Alford named one of his sons after my great grandfather.
