The
Conspiracy of Neamathla
So far I have (thanks to Dale Cox) found two versions of this story. One
was written by Washington Irving and was published in a collection called
Wolfert's Roost and Other Papers Now First Collected. Irving
was a friend and correspondent of Florida's first civil Governor, William
DuVal. DuVal's granddaughter, Mrs. T. P. O'Connor, also wrote a rather
more detailed and somewhat different account in her memoir entitled My Beloved South. Both versions can be read in their entirety:
Washington Irving
Mrs. T. P. O'Connor
